Phuket Border Run: Visa Run to Malaysia, Price and Rules
A Phuket border run on phuketb2c.com costs 4,000 THB: a bus picks you up anywhere on the island and drives to the Malaysian border and back in one day. Since 15 September 2026 Russian citizens and most Western passport holders get 30 visa-free days per entry, and visa-exempt land entries are limited to two per calendar year. A 30-day extension at immigration costs 1,900 THB.
Phuket border run: how the trip works
A Phuket border run is a one-day bus trip to the Malaysian border and back: you leave Thailand, step into Malaysia and re-enter Thailand with a fresh stamp. The bus collects passengers anywhere on the island, each person clears passport control individually, and the group is back the same evening. The visa border run on phuketb2c.com has a fixed price of 4,000 THB.
At the border the sequence is: a Thai exit stamp, a Malaysian entry stamp, then a Malaysian exit stamp and a new Thai entry stamp. That last stamp is the whole point of the trip, since your new permitted stay is counted from its date.
A border run has nothing to do with the airport. The green corridor speeds up passport control when you land but does not change how many days you may stay. If you need both, they are two separate services with separate logistics.
New rules from 15 September 2026: 30 days and two land entries
From 15 September 2026 Thailand grants 30 visa-exempt days instead of 60 to citizens of about 60 countries, including the UK, the US, EU states and Australia. Russian passport holders get 30 days under a bilateral agreement. After a border run you therefore have 30 days from the date of the new stamp. Stamps issued before 15 September remain valid for the period shown.
The key limit: visa-exempt entries through land checkpoints are capped at two per calendar year, with the count resetting on 1 January. Citizens of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei are exempt. A third attempt by land can be refused. Arrivals by air do not count toward this cap, but an officer may question anyone whose passport shows a long run of visa-exempt stamps.
Entry is always at the officer's discretion. You may be asked to show funds (a common guideline is about 20,000 THB per person in cash or on a card), an address and an onward ticket. The rules changed several times in 2025-2026, so check your situation with a lawyer or our manager before you go.
How much a visa run from Phuket costs, and the alternatives
A visa run from Phuket through phuketb2c.com costs 4,000 THB per seat, the operator's own price with no markup. That covers the ride to the Malaysian border and back with pickup anywhere on the island. Visa-exempt entry to Malaysia is free for Russians and most Western passports, and the new Thai stamp costs nothing either. Budget separately for food on the road and personal spending, and ask the manager exactly what is included when you book.
For comparison, a 30-day extension at immigration costs 1,900 THB and requires no travel, but you get one per entry. A DTV visa costs around 10,000 THB in consular fees and requires 500,000 THB in savings, but gives 180 days per entry. The border run makes sense when the extension is already used and a long-stay visa is not yet in place.
Going on your own by public buses with changes is usually cheaper in tickets but slower, and you risk missing the checkpoint's closing time on the way back. An organised trip times the departure to the border's opening hours, and the driver knows where to drop the group and where to wait.
Malaysia visa run: route, travel time and documents
The Malaysian border is roughly 400-500 km from Phuket by highway via Phang Nga, Krabi and Trang, about 6-8 hours each way. That is why departures are usually at night or very early in the morning, with the return the same evening. The manager confirms the exact time and pickup point when you book; double-check them the day before.
You need a passport valid for at least six more months with two blank pages. No earlier than three days before the trip, complete two free online forms: Malaysia's MDAC for entering Malaysia and Thailand's TDAC at tdac.immigration.go.th for the way back. Save the QR codes or screenshots on your phone and print a copy.
Russians need no visa for Malaysia and can stay there up to 30 days, so the brief crossing costs nothing. Hand luggage is checked on both sides: leave vapes and e-cigarettes behind, as they are banned in Thailand. Children need their own passports and the same online forms as adults.
Ranong border run: how it differs from Malaysia
The other well-known route runs north to Ranong: about 300 km and 5-6 hours by road, then a boat to Kawthaung in Myanmar. The drive is shorter, but the Myanmar side has its own fees, the boat depends on the weather, and how the checkpoint operates depends on the situation in Myanmar and can change without notice.
For the two-entries-a-year cap the destination makes no difference: a sea port next to a land border, as in Ranong, counts the same as a road crossing. We run trips to Malaysia: a longer drive, but all by road, no boat transfer, and clear entry rules.
How to book a border run on phuketb2c.com
On the service page press "Book a Border Run" and leave your name and phone number, or message us on Telegram or WhatsApp. A manager replies, typically within 15 minutes during the day, picks a date and confirms the departure time and your pickup point.
Book 2-3 days ahead, or straight away if your stamp is close to expiring, to keep a margin for any rescheduling. The 4,000 THB price is fixed and matches the operator's own rate; there is no platform commission. The evening before, check your passport, your TDAC and MDAC, and be at the pickup point 10-15 minutes early.
Extending a visa-exempt stay without leaving the country
A visa-exempt stay can be extended once by 30 days at the immigration office in Phuket Town. Bring your passport, a TM.7 form, a 4x6 cm photo, copies of your passport and stamp, a TM.30 receipt from your hotel or landlord, and 1,900 THB. Apply before your current stay ends; the officer makes the call.
In practice many long-stayers combine the options: 30 days on arrival, 30 more from an extension, then a Phuket border run for a fresh 30-day stamp. Whether a stamp from a land crossing can then be extended is at the officer's discretion, so ask in advance. For a longer winter, look at long-stay options in visas and lawyers in Phuket, where the first consultation is free.
Mistakes that get people refused on the way back
A third land entry in the same year. An overstay before the trip: the fine of 500 THB a day, capped at 20,000 THB, is collected on exit, but the record makes the officer on the way back stricter. A passport with a damaged cover or no blank pages. A missing TDAC. No funds or address when asked.
Beware of anyone offering a stamp without the trip or a border run "on paper only". Such a stamp is forged, and when it is detected the result is a criminal case, deportation and an entry ban. A genuine border run always means crossing the border in person with your passport.
Do not plan the trip for the last day of your stamp. If the bus is delayed by roadworks or a long queue at the checkpoint, you slip into overstay. Travelling 3-5 days before the stamp expires is the safe window.
Travel tips and a Phuket border run checklist
Take a light jumper, since the bus air conditioning runs all night, plus water, snacks, a charger, a power bank and some cash in baht. If you get around the island in a car from car rentals, leave it at home: rental contracts usually forbid taking the car abroad without the owner's written consent and separate insurance.
Checklist: passport valid for six more months with two blank pages; end date of your current stamp checked; no more than one land entry so far this calendar year; TDAC and MDAC filed and saved; departure time and pickup point confirmed by the manager; money for food and around 20,000 THB available in cash or on a card.
