Insurance & Medical Care in Phuket
We will pick insurance for your itinerary and point you to a clinic with Russian-speaking doctors, message us.
Phuket B2C helps you pick travel insurance for your Phuket itinerary and points you to clinics with Russian-speaking doctors. When choosing a policy, check three things: whether it covers riding a scooter (usually only with a category A licence and a helmet), active holidays such as diving and surfing, and whether the insurer pays the island's major hospitals directly without your prepayment. Private hospitals in Phuket are open around the clock, but without a policy a visit with tests easily costs several thousand baht and a hospital stay much more. Send us your travel dates, the travellers' ages and plans, and we will suggest options.
FAQ
Does travel insurance cover a scooter accident?+
Only if the policy says so explicitly, and usually on three conditions: you hold a licence with category A (international or Thai), you wore a helmet and you were not drunk. Without a category A licence the insurer almost always refuses to pay, even if the policy was bought. When we pick a policy we check this clause in the insurer's terms.
Where should I go if I need a doctor in Phuket?+
In an insured case, first call the insurer's assistance line from your policy: they send you to a clinic where the insurer pays for treatment directly. Phuket has several large private hospitals open around the clock, some with Russian-speaking coordinators. Tell us the area you are staying in and we will point you to the nearest clinic with Russian-speaking doctors. In an emergency call 1669, Thailand's ambulance service.
Can I buy insurance if I am already in Phuket?+
Yes, some insurers sell policies to people who are already abroad, but usually with a waiting period of a few days during which nothing is covered. Illnesses and injuries that began before the policy was bought are as a rule not covered. So it is best to buy insurance before you fly, and if you did not, send us your dates and age and we will find an option with as few restrictions as possible.
How much does treatment in Phuket cost without insurance?+
At Phuket's private hospitals a GP visit usually costs 800-2,500 THB, an X-ray 500-2,000 THB, an emergency room visit with minor treatment 5,000-15,000 THB and a night in a ward 5,000-12,000 THB. Fracture surgery with a plate costs roughly 80,000-300,000 THB, and a serious scooter accident with intensive care from 200,000 THB to 2 million or more. Government hospitals are cheaper, but expect queues and a language barrier.
Do you need medical insurance to enter Thailand?+
At the time of publication, tourists entering visa-free or on a tourist visa are generally not asked for a policy at the border. The Thai government is preparing mandatory insurance for foreign visitors in 2026, so check the current requirements before you fly. For some long-stay visas, such as the Non-Immigrant O-A retirement visa, insurance is already mandatory. And even where the law does not require it, travel insurance for Phuket protects you from bills of hundreds of thousands of baht.
What sum insured should I choose for a Thailand travel policy?+
For Thailand a sensible minimum is 50,000 USD or EUR. If you plan to ride a scooter, dive or travel with children, 100,000 is better: surgery and a few days of intensive care at a private hospital easily exceed 1 million baht. Also check the deductible, medical evacuation and repatriation, and above all whether the insurer can pay Phuket hospitals directly.
Where can I find a Russian-speaking doctor in Phuket?+
The island's large private hospitals have international departments with interpreters: Bangkok Hospital Phuket, for example, lists Russian among the languages of its staff interpreters. Small clinics in the beach areas sometimes have Russian-speaking doctors, but staff change. Tell us the area you are staying in, and the manager will suggest the nearest clinic that currently offers appointments in Russian.
Does travel insurance for Phuket cover diving and Muay Thai?+
A standard travel policy usually covers neither. Diving needs a separate add-on that states the permitted depth and the certificate required. Muay Thai and other combat sports need a sports option, and many insurers exclude contact sports and sparring altogether. Check this in the policy terms before your first session: once you are injured, the policy conditions can no longer be changed.
What should I do if a hospital in Phuket asks for a deposit?+
Without a payment guarantee from the insurer, a private hospital may ask for a deposit or a card before treatment starts. Call the assistance line from your policy straight away: the insurer sends the clinic a guarantee of payment (GOP), and the bill is paid directly. If you do end up paying yourself, keep the medical report with the diagnosis, the itemised bill and the receipts: the insurer uses them to reimburse your costs within the policy terms.
